Stellar populaton studies: Insights from UVIT

Abstract: Young and old star clusters are copious emitters in the UV. Old stellar populations are dominated by low mass systems and the end stages of single and binary stars. Several exotic stellar populations found in old star clusters, such as Blue Straggler stars, Blue and extreme horizontal branch stars, Cataclysmic variables and white dwarfs are found to dominate the UV flux in globular clusters and old open clusters. Young star forming regions dominated by the massive OBA type stars that have significant UV flux are ideal to trace recent star formation up to a few hundred Myr in the nearby galaxies. In this talk, I present the results from our studies of old open star clusters, globular clusters and nearby galaxies observed using UVIT. I shall also discuss the insights gained from the superior resolution and the efficient use of UVIT filters that help to understand the properties of detected population.
