Welcome to the Crystalline Materials Group

The Crystalline Materials Group is a part of the Physics Department at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Crystals are an essential link between academic research and modern technology due to their inherently high order and intrinsic stability. We grow single crystals of many functional materials because they serve as choice materials for fundamental studies by virtue of the anisotropy in their physical properties.

Creating dimensionally large and pristine single crystals of novel materials is central to our research. The research endeavour begins with material synthesis followed by preliminary characterization and crystal growth. On ascertaining their phase purity and crystalline nature, we undertake a variety of investigative studies on these crystals.

Perfection, purity and consistency -- that is our motto!

Techniques we employ
Sample synthesis by solid state reaction, nitrate and sol gel route, solvothermal method. Single crystal growth using optical floating zone, Bridgman, Czochralski technique and also from flux and solution.

Topics of our interest
Multifunctional materials, Multiferroics, Crystal growth and design, Magnetism, Superconductivity and Nonlinear optics.

Materials we work with
Oxides and chalcogenides.
Perovskites and double perovskites of manganite, nickelate, ferrite and cobaltite and various other organic and inorganic materials.

Diagnostics we perform
Structural, magnetic, transport, dielectric, ferroelectric properties, impedance spectroscopy and nonlinear optical activity.
